From what she learned, the trials were considered a very serious matter in which innocent people were killed. She has a hard time taking the trials in Salem lightly.

As a grad student majoring in history, Connie understands the witch trials from a historical standpoint. Sam thinks nothing of it, but Connie is upset because “it speaks to how alienated we all are from history.” (140) It is in this part of the story that Connie’s character is further developed into the intelligent woman we see her to be. Sam and Connie sit watching jovial tourists visit the numerous witch replication shops. It is here in the story, where we start to see the differences between them. Where Connie is cautious, her mother is careless. Connie and her mother are two very different people. She thinks her mother is irresponsible and unorganized. You'd think after 25 years of self-actualization she'd be able to manage her own mess.' (31) Connie is very angered by the fact that her mother hadn't ever bothered to mention the house before. 'It's always like this! She has some disaster, and no matter what I happen to be doing, I have to drop everything and pick up the pieces. Her mother had just told her about the old house and asked her to go clean it up during the summer. We can see that she is intimidated by Chilton, but also fears letting him down.Ĭonnie is on her way to her grandmother's house with her friend Liz. At first, she was seen as calm and collected but now we see that she too gets nervous and anxious. 'Connie smiled at him, the nervous grimace of an animal fending off an attacker.' (16) As her character develops throughout the book, we start to see a side of her that we didn't before. After Chilton asking her if there was something she missed, she grows nervous and weary. Connie is being questioned by Professor Chilton about the Salem witch trials. Connie starts out as a very different character in the beginning of the book versus at the end.
